How Google and AI engines truncate your snippet

Google does not cut titles and descriptions by character count — it cuts by pixel width, then frequently rewrites the title entirely. In a 2025 study of title tags, Google rewrote roughly 76% of them; the band that survived best was 51–60 characters. This tool measures real pixel width (the same font Google renders) so you can see the truncation point, not guess at it.

Title: ~580–600px

Desktop titles truncate near 580–600px (roughly 50–60 characters). Past that, Google may cut or rewrite. Keep your keyword in the first half.

Description: ~155–160 chars

Desktop descriptions truncate around 155–160 characters (~920px); mobile a little shorter. Front-load the hook.

AI citation card

AI Overviews and Perplexity often show your title plus your meta description as the citation card. A sharp description earns clicks from inside the AI answer.

Put the brand last

Removing or relocating the brand is the single most common Google title rewrite. Lead with the keyword and outcome; end with | Brand.

Why this matters in the AI-search era

When an AI Overview answers the query, the classic blue-link click rate drops sharply — but pages that get cited inside the AI answer earn meaningfully more clicks than uncited competitors. Your title and meta description are the copy on that citation card. Getting them right is one of the few snippet-level levers that still moves clicks in 2026.
